HBO Greenlights Televangelism show ‘The Righteous Gem Stones’

HBO has given a pilot order to Danny McBride for The Righteous Gemstones.[/tweetit] The 30-minute long comedy revolves around fictional televangelist character Eli Gemstone, played by John Goodman. McBride will write, direct and produce the series.

McBride will star in The Righteous Gemstones, as well. He will play the role of Jesse, Eli's son, who is slated to inherit the Gemstone empire. He has ambitions on his own. Jesse wants to expand and modernize on the lucrative empire crafted by his father. McBride and Goodman will be a formidable force in the new series, portraying a lasting tradition of charitable work, deviance, and greed “all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Jody Hill will serve as the Executive Producer with McBride, joined by David Gordon Green. The three are longtime collaborators and gel with each other when it comes to working. They have together worked on The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, a picture commissioned by Netflix. McBride has experience in creating commercial and creative successes like Vice Principals and Eastbound & Down.

According to Variety magazine, Goodman’s character is the patriarch of the evangelical family. An aggressive individual in all aspects of life, including the dissemination of faith. He commands a world-wide ministry and helms am award-winning weekly television show. Nobody has the audacity to question his demands and consequently his decisions. Jesse, McBride's character, is ambitious and trying his best to come out of his father's shadow. Jesses sees himself somewhat of a maverick in the evangelical world by updating the televangelism game for today’s audience.

For Goodman, the HBO show will be a gear change. He is already booked for The Conners, a Roseanne spinoff following the firing of Roseanne Barr from the show due to racist tweets. The plan at present is Goodman will act first in the pilot episode of the Gemstones, and then move to his role as Dan Conner immediately afterward. If The Righteous Gemstones, get promoted to a stable series, then Goodman will be a permanent fixture in the series along with McBride.
