Nearly 30 years ago, Scientology sponsored racing driver Roberto Guerrero.
In anticipation of the Indy 500 next month, Autoweek is counting down the “100 Headlines that Shaped the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”

#39 on the list, published today, is when the Church of Scientology sponsored Roberto Guerrero and displayed a “Dianetics” logo on his car in 1988.

Dianetics is defined as “a methodology which can help alleviate unwanted sensations and emotions, irrational fears and psychosomatic illnesses (illnesses caused or aggravated by mental stress).”
The sponsorship was the first of its kind for a religious organization.
