“First of all, I am not an atheist,” Bernie Sanders said in response to DNC efforts to ruin his campaign

Last Friday (July 22), WikiLeaks released about 20,000 emails stolen from the DNC's (Democratic National Committee) servers on social media. The hacking was perpetrated by a person using the handle “Guccifer 2.0.” The emails that contain information about the Democratic Party's 2016 Presidential campaign show that the party's presidential primary campaign that was supposed to be neutral towards the party candidates, was not. It favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in a big way.

One of the emails that show that the party officials worked against Sanders comes from Brad Marshall, DNC's Chief Financial Officer. According to the email, he wanted a surrogate to be sent to ask a man of “Jewish heritage” whether Sanders believed in God or not. Although Marshall refrained from naming Sanders specifically in the email, it is only anybody's guess that he was referring to Sanders who is of the Jewish faith. Marshall, when asked to comment about this, denied that he was referring to Sanders.

The leaks caused a massive political firestorm to break out. As a result of the strong outcry against him, and the intense pressure from the Clinton campaign, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, DNC chairwoman, after speaking with President Obama last week, decided to step down. Her resignation will take effect on 28 July, upon the close of the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

If the DNC had followed through with the plan to paint Sanders as an atheist, it would have discredited him with the Christian voters.

In an interview given to CNN last Sunday, Sanders said that Wasserman Schultz has never been the right person to chair the DNC. The Democratic Party should be a party that reaches out to working people and young people. Wasserman Schultz never tried to do that.

Sanders further said that he is not an atheist. He also made it clear that he will not be trying to re-open the Democratic primary in the wake of the revelations. He has already endorsed Clinton, and he would continue to support her. Right now, his goal is to prevent Donald Trump, which according to him is the worst Republican candidate in the history of America, from getting elected as the President of the United States.

Donald Trump, in the wake of the whole incident, tweeted that the “The Democrats are in a total meltdown but the biased media will say how great they are doing! E-mails say the rigged system is alive & well!”

Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager said that, according to the security experts, it was the Russian state hackers who hacked into the DNC servers. They released the emails in order to manipulate the U.S. election, to help Donald Trump.
