When questioned about the development, Newt Gingrich did not deny nor confirm media reports of his wife being selected as the U.S. Ambassador. He said both he and Callista must be extremely cautious until the final announcement was done. Stories of her nomination surfaced during the early days of 2017. Newt Gingrich told a prominent media house at that time he has taken the decision not to relocate to Rome. Instead he would continue to be Virginia resident and travel frequently to the Holy See. Callista Gingrich has offered no comment on these latest developments.

Sean Spicer, the Press Secretary of the White House, had declined to confirm if Callista Gingrich was nominated for Ambassador of the United States to the Vatican.[/tweetit] In his press briefing, he said that unless it is announced, nothing can be termed official.

An ethics office spokesman, Vince Salamone, said financial disclosures made by Gingrich were approved on April 7. The office now awaits the White House's formal nomination. It is believed the Trump administration will nominate Callista Gingrich within the month of May.

Newt Gingrich converted to Catholicism from being a Southern Baptist in 2009. He often spoke about his faith journey. It is believed that Callista, his present wife, has a major role in the conversion. Gingrich even acknowledged such in a National Catholic Register editorial. Newt and Callista wed in 2000, after the former House Speaker divorced Marianne, his second wife. Marianne, in her media interview, said Newt has asked for an open marriage which she roundly refused.

Newt Gingrich, it later came to light, had an affair with Callista Bisek for six years. She was a congressional aide at that time. Ironically, he was leading the impeachment proceedings against then President Bill Clinton. The latter was in trouble when his affair with Monica Lewinsky, an intern in the White House, became public. The Gingrichs are owners of a production company specializing in documentary films. Their most famous documentary is Nine Days That Changed the World, a documentary concerning Pope John Paul II. A large number of Catholics have spoken warmly about the film.
