The evangelical loves his access to power at whatever personal cost

Christian evangelist Franklin Graham has come under severe criticism for his defense of President Donald J. Trump[/tweetit]. The U.S. President has been accused of paying off a porn star to remain quiet concerning an alleged affair. A lawyer acting for Trump had reputedly paid Stormy Daniels off. Graham did not utter even one word of condemnation against the president when he was interviewed by Alex Witt of MSNBC.

Graham at first suggested that the story was completely a fake one. The reason for his assertion is that Trump has not admitted it. The evangelist then added that it would be immaterial even if it was true as the billionaire turned president is not “President Perfect.” Graham, during his interview, told Witt that he has no clue whether Trump had an affair with Daniels. He then said that the president at 70 years of age is a changed man compared to four years or ten years ago. It is okay to give the president a benefit of doubt. Since he said that he did not do the deed, it could be that he did not.

Graham then went on to explain his standpoint further, saying the president is a flawed person and it is the evangelist's duty to support and also pray for him. He then compared his life to the president and said that like Trump, he too has flaws. Like him, he pressed the point, the president has also asked forgiveness from God. There is one problem with Graham's argument though- there is no proof that Trump has actually prayed for forgiveness.

Graham's words could be taken at face value if his views were uniformly acceptable to all. He was the person who was loath to accept that the former President, Barack Obama was a Christian. The evangelical is on record saying that since Obama claimed to be a Christian, he [Graham] will have to accept that the former president is actually a Christian. Trump, in contrast, lives a life which violates all Christian principles, but the evangelist will wholeheartedly accept his Christianity. One political commenter has succinctly described the situation, saying that Trump is not only not “President Perfect,” he is “not even President Remotely Adequate.” The truth is that Graham loves the access to power and is also blinded by his faith.
