1. Purpose
This policy explains how WRN approaches artificial-intelligence tools in editorial and production work while preserving human editorial responsibility, accuracy and transparency.
2. Permitted editorial assistance
AI tools may be used for functions such as transcription, translation, research assistance, document organisation, summarisation, drafting assistance, proofreading, headline assistance, image generation or other production tasks. AI output is not treated as a verified factual source merely because it was produced by an AI system.
3. Human editorial responsibility
The Foundation remains responsible for material published by WRN. Material factual claims should be verified as appropriate. AI assistance does not reduce the standards applied to corrections, attribution, copyright, privacy or journalistic accuracy.
4. Public-interest text
Article 50 of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act contains transparency obligations for certain AI-generated or manipulated content. In particular, deployers of AI systems that generate or manipulate text published to inform the public on matters of public interest must disclose that fact, subject to the Regulation’s exceptions, including where the AI-generated content has undergone human review or editorial control and a natural or legal person holds editorial responsibility for publication.
WRN will apply the legally required disclosure where that obligation applies and may choose to disclose material AI assistance more broadly as an editorial-transparency practice.
5. Artificially generated or manipulated images, audio and video
Where WRN uses AI to generate or materially manipulate image, audio or video content that could be mistaken for authentic documentary material, WRN will provide the disclosure required by applicable law. Deepfake content will not be presented as authentic documentary evidence.
6. Suggested article notices
Where useful, WRN may use wording such as: “AI assistance: artificial-intelligence tools were used to assist with [transcription/translation/research/drafting]. A human editor reviewed and approved the final publication.”
Where a stronger disclosure is legally or editorially appropriate, WRN may state that content was artificially generated or materially manipulated and describe the human review performed.
7. Corrections
If AI use contributes to a material factual error, fabricated quotation, incorrect attribution, misleading image or similar substantive problem, WRN will correct or remove the material as appropriate under its Editorial Standards & Corrections policy.
