Utah residents are the most frequent church attendees in America, according to a Gallup poll. Next are the residents from Missisippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Arkansas. Frequent church attendance is lowest in Vermont.
Ten American states with the highest weekly church attendance are Utah with 51 percent, Mississippi (47), Alabama and Louisiana (46), Arkansas (45), South Carolina and Tennessee (42), Kentucky (41), North Carolina (40), and Georgia, Texas and Oklahoma (39).
The lowest attendance is in Vermont with 17%, New Hampshire and Maine (20), Massachusetts (22), Washington and Oregon (24), Hawaii, Colorado and Connecticut (25), and Alaska (26).

The state-by-state variations in church attendance are significant because attendance is a powerful indicator of underlying religiosity. This is reflected in Americans’ views on life, culture, society in general and politics.
Those who are the most religious are also most likely to be Republican, with the exception of blacks. This explains the connection between states with the highest church attendance and traditional red states.
The results are based on Gallup Daily tracking interviews in 2014 with 177,030 American adults. They reflect those who say “at least once a week” when asked, “How often do you attend church, synagogue or mosque – at least once a week, almost every week, about once a month, seldom or never?”
