I honestly think that in order to see someone’s true character, you need to see how they live when the lights are off and when no one’s watching. You need to trace what they bring to the game back to what they practice in the unseen. Because the roots will reveal the reality of one’s character growth. And the congruency between their hustle in practice and their hustle in the game, will provide authenticity and validation for their becoming.

I feel like it’s an everyday battle for me to focus on what God is doing in the unseen and to give up my short term desires for his long term promises. Some days I win, and some days I lose, but every experience brings a lesson, which I then try to illustrate. My practices are messy, and sometimes I beat myself up over it, but like a fatherly coach, God’s always in the back of my mind whispering, “That’s what practice is for.” So with grace sustaining me, and God’s love motivating me, my heart hustles to improve. And I hope I step forward with authenticity, so that my life can reflect his goodness and grace, rather than his expectation for perfection.
