The Fences film derives its inspiration from a play. It follows the milestones and trials of an African-American Pittsburgh resident during the 1950s. The resident is solidly working class. Washington, during a press conference call in December of 2016, said a local woman living near filming location helped to make a prayer place for him. He said such an action supported him when he needed it most. The actor also said the people were wonderful to him.

Fences was nominated in a number of categories, including Best Motion Picture. Washington got nominated for Best Actor and Wilson was in line for the Best Adapted Screenplay award. The latter received posthumous nomination as he had died in 2005.

She also thanked Mary Alice and Dan Davis, her parents. She described them as the center of her universe. Viola Davis expressed thanks to God for giving her such wonderful parents[/tweetit], and mentioned her parents taught her the difference between bad and good. She added they also taught her how to love and fail, and how to lose and also how to hold any award.

Other than Viola Davis, another professional film maker, Iranian Asghar Farhadi, won the best foreign language feature award. In protest of Trump’s travel ban, he did not appear at the awards and instead Anousheh Ansari accepted the award on his behalf and read a speech he’d written. Farhadi thanked the Academy members, his Iranian crew members and also Cohen Media, his producer. He also thanked Amazon along with his fellow nominees. He apologized for not being present in the venue and added this was out of respect for people of Iran and for citizens of six other countries who were subjected to acute humiliation by the new United States law which forbids immigrants from these countries to set foot in the U.S. He mentioned such actions create fear, dividing the world into enemies and makes a deceitful case for war.
