Carrie Fisher, who identified herself as a Jew, was raised a Protestant.
Carrie Frances Fisher, the American actress, producer, writer, and humorist better known for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars movie series died Tuesday at age 60. Fisher was born to actress Debbie Reynolds (a Nazarene) and singer Eddie Fisher (a Jew). She was born in Beverly Hills, California. Fisher's paternal grandparents were Jewish Russian immigrants. Fisher was raised a Protestant. However, her father's religion influenced her so much that she later started identifying as Jewish. According to Fisher, it was her father singing in the synagogue that impacted her spirituality. In an interview given to JWeekly, a San Francisco-based Jewish newspaper, Fisher said that she and her daughter often used to attend Jewish services and take part in Shabbat meals. Lighting candles have a certain loveliness to it, so have saying thanks to a lovely week. She expressed Judaism by singing the song Hearts and Bones, that has lyrics expressing the freedom of Jews, a song that was written by her ex-husband Paul Simon.

Fisher was just two years old when her parents divorced. This prompted her to find solace in books. Eventually, she started writing poetry. Her entry to show business at the age of 15 forced her to drop her studies. She later enrolled herself at the London’s Central School of Speech and Drama. Even though she got into Sarah Lawrence College as well, she had to drop out before graduation since the college timings conflicted with her Star Wars schedule. A few of her other films include Shampoo (1975), The ‘Burbs (1989), and also the popular movie When Harry Met Sally (1989).
Carrie Fisher has also been one of the sought-after script doctors in Hollywood. George Lucas hired her to polish the scripts for his TV series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992). Her semi-autobiographical novel, Postcards from the Edge, received a lot of attention and praise.
Fisher's own personal life has not exactly been ideal. She had her trysts with drugs and alcohol. She had relationships with a number of men, including a three month affair with Harrison Ford while filming Star Wars in 1976. Fisher, at a later period during her life, publicly spoke about her drug problems and her getting diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
I'm shocked and saddened to hear the news about my dear friend @carrieffisher. Our thoughts are with Carrie, her family and friends.

Fisher blasted the UK cinemas for preventing to show a 60-second advert that featured the Lord’s Prayer before showing Star Wars: The Force Awakens in which she reprises her role as Princess Leia.
A day after her daughter’s death, Debbie Reynolds may have suffered a stroke while planning her daughter’s funeral. She died a couple hours later at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. Reynolds was 84.
