Gomez revealed her religious beliefs on the set of the Zach Sang Show. She said, “It’s hard because I don’t know if it’s necessary that I believe in religion as much as I believe in faith and a relationship with God,” adding that she is not the kind of person who believes in any kind of dogma or theology that insists that something is right or wrong.

She added that for her, there are certain things in life that cannot be explained or understood, and it is her faith that helps her to accept those moments. She also said it was this faith that she had which helped her get through some rough patches in her life. Of religion, however, she said: “That word freaks me out sometimes, you know.”

The pop singer belongs to the emerging group of believers who are “spiritual,” and believe in God but refuse to be part of any organized religion. The declining number of members in religion are not indicative of a declining belief in God. People may still believe in a Higher Power, but do not believe in the importance of belonging to any organized religious institution, insisting on a more personal experience of God without any mediators.

What confuses her fans, however, is the fact that despite her denying of belonging to any organized religion, Gomez is known to be a regular attendee for the services at Hillsong United Church – a Church that is known to be a spiritual home for a number of celebrities. In fact, Gomez even considers Pastor Carl Lentz, the leader of the Hillsong United Church, as her mentor and spiritual advisor. She herself has revealed that she goes to him for advice and guidance. “I haven’t really been all over the place lately and that’s kind of intentional. I think it’s important to balance out where I am, and I’ve been doing this for a really long time, and my sanity has meant everything to me, and a lot of that is my faith,” she says, stressing that she is not a full-time member.
