Was Father Junipero Serra a saint or a sinner? Protesters have decided the latter and have vandalized and topped statues of the man canonized in 2015 by Pope Francis. Serra founded nine missions in California, and his use of corporal punishment on indigenous people is the cause of much of the opposition to his beatification and his statues.
