Speakers at the International Prayer Day for North Korea warned that darkness encompasses the complete North Korean society and Christians must do something to save it. A number of speeches claimed that North Korea imprisons, tortures, and executes Christians.

They also said opportunities are increasingly opening up to weaken the grip of the totalitarian regime. Zoe Smith, who heads advocacy at Open Doors, a persecution charity, is of the opinion that North Korea will meet a similar fate as East Germany. The wall separating North Korea and South Korea would break down. To do this, she said, Christians must pray for breaking the wall and also for the Christians being persecuted in North Korea.

The event began with a speech by Lord Alton. The latter gave an introductory speech. He also spoke on the subject of what North Korea’s past can shed light on its present crisis. The total list of speakers included Timothy Cho, Fiona Bruce Member of Parliament from UK All Party Parliamentary Group on North Korea, Baroness Smith, and Pastor Cho Dae-Hee. Open Doors’ Zoe Smith will also be in attendance.

Timothy Cho was formerly homeless in North Korea. After arriving in the United Kingdom, he has achieved what will be regarded as impossible in North Korea-he gained a BA in International Relations and Politics. This was succeeded by MA in International Relations, Politics, and Security.

The speeches harped on changes in North Korea. They said that the old system in the country is slowly been replaced by informal capitalist markets. It means that a number of possibilities are emerging at the moment. A few speakers also pointed out that old repressive measures like prison camps, torture, and arbitrary executions continue to this day. Sine the country is no longer as tightly controlled as it was done previously, and thus change is possible. The Open Doors charity has ranked North Korea as worst when it comes to a country list for Christian persecution.

The prayer event included testimonies gleaned from two defectors from North Korea. According to a certain Christian media website, North Korean Christians suffer regularly from enslavement, arrest, and starvation. They are also subject to other kinds of oppression and violence. The prayer event was held to signify that Christians in North Korea are not forgotten and their suffering is always in the mind of those praying.
