Hungary’s top lawmaker ishonoring Miklos Horthy
On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Budapest’s Main Parish Church of the Assumption is going to hold a ceremony where they honor Miklos Horthy, a staunch ally of Hitler.[/tweetit]
According to the Main Parish Church of Assumption, Sandor Lezsak, member of the ruling party Fidesz and the parliament’s deputy speaker, is going to be one of the many guests who will be attending the ceremony. Christian organization KESZ group had sent invitations to the ceremony. Sandor Lezsak was one of the many people who got the invitation to attend this event.

On Tuesday, the Jewish Hungarian weekly, Szombat had the following report about the invitation, “In the Holy Mass, we remember with affection and respect the late governor Miklos Horthy (1868-1957), who was born 150 years ago.”
According to the article written by Szombat, the entire event held by the Main Parish Church of Assumption was provocative. However, other details regarding this event aren’t quite clear. Szombat doesn’t know if the church will be hosting the event on January 27th due to the symbolic significance of that date.
Veritas Historical Research Institute’s head, Sandor Szakaly, also has plans to attend this ceremony. During an interview with Szakaly in 2014, he was asked to share his opinion on the deportation that took place in 1941, which led to the deaths of many Jews. His description of the entire scenario was, “action of the immigration authorities against illegal aliens.”

The Jewish people of Hungary don’t like Miklos Horthy one bit as he gave his signature for 1920, 1938, and 1939 anti-Jewish laws. In June, Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary gave a speech. In his speech, he was talking about the country’s Austro-Hungarian Empire had collapsed after the end of World War 1. He also talked about the “exceptional statemen,” who were people that led Hungary forward. Among those was Miklos Horthy, a man who was responsible for the deaths of over 500,000 victims of the Holocaust. As a result of this, the Hungarian Jews started a protest.
After Viktor Orban became the prime minister of Hungary, he made Szakaly as the head of the Veritas Historical Research Institute.
