The singer does it again! In April 2013, Selena Gomez made headlines all over the world, especially in India by sporting a Bindi during her performance at the MTV Movie Awards. Selena raised a lot of eyebrows with what seems like a fashion statement, rather than a spiritual one. While some Hindus approved, many didn’t. The Twitter world was flooded with mixed opinions about the act. Ignoring the controversy, she yet again irked the Hindu community by donning a Bindi at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards.
A Bindi is a spiritual symbol in Hinduism, but it is not restricted to Hindus or India in particular. Women from different religions in South Asia, Pakistan and Bangladesh sport a Bindi these days. It is believed that the area between the eyebrows is point where the Kundalini energy exits the body. A Bindi is said to retain that energy within oneself. It can also symbolize a woman’s love for her husband and denotes that she sees God in him.
Selina continued to wear the Bindi on and off stage, despite criticism.
Hindu leaders condemned Selena for the performances, saying she is unceasingly disregarding the essence of Hinduism. Rajan Zed, the president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, stated Gomez is constantly being insensitive towards the feelings and traditions of Hindus. She faced similar criticism for her recent performances at other events.
Rajan Zed was clearly upset and emphasized that Hollywood stars should understand the importance of Bindi in Hinduism. He also stated that it should not be used as a style accessory or for seductive effect. He asked Selena to apologize to the Hindu community and suggested she seriously learn and explore Hinduism.
