Pope Francis has once again broken with papal tradition by asking whether the people of Mexico will greet him with tequila when he makes a state visit there next month.

During a regular meeting with pilgrims in St. Peter's Square on New Year's Day, a Mexican priest, Carlos Alberto Cardona, called out to him, saying "Pope! We are waiting for you in Mexico." Showing his quick wit, Pope Francis responded by asking "With or without tequila?" Without batting an eyelid, the pilgrim replied, "With lots of tequila," prompting laughter from those nearby.

Video footage of this incident has since gone viral on social media in Mexico, with many glad to see that the Pope holds an understanding of what the Mexican people hold dear.

Aside from the tequila, Pope Francis' visit will involve both official and religious engagements, as he travels through the states of México, Chiapas, Michoacán and Chihuahua, as well as Mexico City itself. During his time in the country, he will meet with its leader, President Enrique Peña Nieto, as well as other officials. On top of this, he will connect with indigenous communities as well as a Mass celebration at the Basilica of Guadalupe.

Despite being known for shying away from extravagant meals, the Pope does occasionally indulge in a glass of wine with dinner. Given his growing reputation as "the People's Pope," it seems likely that Pope Francis will enjoy a tipple of tequila during his visit.
