The Passion of the Christ sequel has been confirmed, Gibson teams up with Braveheart writer Randall Wallace.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer Randall Wallace and Mel Gibson are working on a sequel to the 2004 movie that depicts the Passion of Jesus as told in the Gospels of Matthew, John, Luke, and Mark.

The Passion of the Christ was made on a budget of $30 million. It grossed over $600 million worldwide. The script for the movie was developed by Mel Gibson and Benedict Fitzgerald, and the movie was directed by Mel Gibson.

The subject of the sequel is set to be the resurrection of Jesus, a topic that Wallace specialized in during his religious study at Duke University. According to Wallace, he always wanted to tell the story, and The Passion is just the beginning, there is a lot more to tell. He further said that the Christian Evangelical community considers The Passion of the Christ as the best and biggest movie to ever come out of Hollywood. They believe that a sequel would make even more of an impact.

When The Passion was released, it courted controversies instantly. It received mixed reviews. One of the main criticisms has been about the excessive violence portrayed in the movie. According to the critics, the extreme violence obscured the actual message of the Passion of Jesus. Responding to the violence in the movie, Gibson said that he wanted the movie to be extreme, to be shocking, so that the world could see the enormity of Jesus's sacrifice, how someone could endure such pain, suffering, and ridicule, and still come back with forgiveness and love. According to Gibson, the actual crucifixion was even more violent than shown in the movie.

The Passion of the Christ started an era of faith movies in Hollywood. However, it still remains the highest grossing religious film of all time. The movie received three Academy Award nominations.

Gibson and Wallace are still in the early stages of developing a script. No details regarding the casting have been released yet, not even whether Jim Caviezel, the actor who portrayed Jesus Christ in The Passion of the Christ, would return in the title role or not. According to Wallace, several studios/financiers are interested in the project, however, none have been finalized yet. It is too early to talk finance. The subject is very sacred and huge.

Sony recently released a faith-based movie, Risen. It tells the story of resurrection through the eyes of a Roman soldier, played by Joseph Fiennes. The $20 million-budget movie so far has grossed around $46 million worldwide.
