Trey declared, “I never wanted to be gay. I was scared of what God would think and what all of these people I loved would think about me; so it never was an option for me.” The letter ended with the singer's personal struggle between sexuality and faith. With this announcement, Pearson becomes a member of a growing group of Christian musicians identifying themselves as LGBT.

Pearson, who is 35 years old, has a successful career in the Christian rock scene. His band, Everyday Sunday, reached 15th rank with Best Night of Our Lives, an album released in 2009. Everyday Sunday also composed 20 singles which reached the top ten position on the Christian rock charts. The band has toured 20 countries and 50 states.

In the letter, Pearson said that he was brought up in an extremely conservative Christian home. He said that he was taught in his childhood that one's sexual orientation can be chosen by the individual and he put his faith in this concept. He added that he had never wanted to be gay in the first place and even never admitted to himself of being gay. He said that what God would think of him and also the reaction of the people who loved him. He has been suppressing these feelings and attractions from adolescence, and wanted to be straight.

Pearson has described his coming out as “freeing.” He admitted this coming out announcement has cost him his closest friends and a number of people he was intimate with. He alleged that a few “church people” are one of the worst he has experienced in his life and said that he is starting afresh and feels lonely.

The letter also shows him praising his wife of seven years. They have two children by marriage. The couple have since separated but continue to share their parental responsibilities. He admitted that the journey up to this point was really difficult, but he now feels free.

A number of other well-known Christian musicians have outed themselves as gay. The list includes Vicky Beeching, Ray Boltz and Grammy nominees like Jennifer Knapp and Anthony Williams. Pearson has already announced a single to be released late this year.
