“I don’t think God cares a whole lot about the outcome. He cares about the people involved, but I don’t think he’s a big football fan.” -Aaron Rodgers

It happened during the 2014 NFC Championship Game. For most of the game, it seemed like the Seahawks would not be able to beat the Packers. Russell Wilson was sacked multiple times and also ended up throwing four interceptions. In the third quarter, the Seahawks trailed 16-0, but then something incredible happened.  Punter Jon Ryan converted a fake field goal turning it into a fantastic touchdown. This changed the score to 16-7.

The last two minutes of the game were Wilson’s moments of fame on the field as he led his team to victory with a 35-yard touchdown pass, 28-22.

Russell Wilson, the Seahawks quarterback, is known for his outspoken demeanor and recently he was all in praise of God for guiding his team towards a brilliant victory in a match against the Green Bay Packers. The comment by Wilson that perhaps invited the mock from Aaron Rodgers was “This is God’s way of making it all so dramatic and so rewarding.”

However, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers has a different opinion and does not feel that God is involved in the game of football. In fact, as he responded to various questions asked of him on his weekly radio show, Tuesdays with Aaron, and his belief that God really doesn’t have power over the result of any football game. His comment suggests he might be holding a grudge against Wilson. So he wasn’t really thrilled about Wilson outperforming the Packers.

As Jason Wilde (ESPN) read a question from one of the listeners on his show:

“I always find it a little off-putting when athletes, actors and anybody says, 'This is what God wanted,' or 'I want to thank God for helping us win today,' anything along those lines when a game or award is won. I'm paraphrasing here, but you get the gist. Personally, with all the chaos in the world, I'm not sure God really cares about the outcome of a game or an awards show. What do you think of statements such as these? You've obviously got your faith. Does what happens on Sunday impact your relationship with God or your faith at all?”

Rodgers responded: “I agree with her. I don't think God cares a whole lot about the outcome. He cares about the people involved, but I don't think he's a big football fan."
