Director Spike Lee releases new gripping film BlacKkKlansman.

Spike Lee’s new film, BlacKkKlansman revolves around Ron Stallworth, a rookie police officer in Colorado Springs. The actor playing this role is John David Washington, the son of Denzel Washington.

The plot

Ron Stallworth plans to bring down the local Ku Klux Klan by conducting a sting operation. To infiltrate the group, he poses as a racist and contacts them. However, as a black man, he obviously cannot join the group himself. Instead, he asks Flip Zimmerman, a white Jewish man, to impersonate him, so he can be a part of the group’s activities.

He knows about the existence of the Ku Klux Klan, after coming across an advertisement in the newspaper. Flip Zimmerman states he isn’t quite Jewish, despite wearing the Star of David.  His skin color allows him to pass off as a White Anglo Saxon Protestant.

Due to his Jewish roots, there is a very high chance he could be one of the KKK’s many victims. During his initiation into the group, he has to take an oath that he is a non-Jewish white. As one of the group members became suspicious, they hook him up to a lie-detector.

It is quite interesting that Zimmerman starts to embrace his Jewish roots after joining the group. He started to research various Jewish rituals and his heritage, to know more about his identity. During the later stages of the movie, Lee introduces a new character, known as Mr. Turner, who is an orator. Turner talks about Jesse Washington’s lynching which took place in 1916.

Spike Lee’s controversial stunt

Lee’s movies are quite popular for attracting controversy, due to his take on various touchy topics. For instance, when Do the Right Thing came out, the reviewer and political columnist of New York Magazine, predicted the film would provoke black rioting. In his latest movie, he attracts controversy during the ending credits. The American flag gets turned upside down, before changing its color to black and white.

Both targets of white supremacists, Lee celebrates the bond between blacks and Jews in this movie. BlacKkKlansman is a significant film to watch during the current social and political climate.
