On the night of December 18, the Finnish band Nightwish performed an extraordinary concert for thousands of its fans in London’s Wembley Arena. But the sold-out concert was further made special by the appearance of one of the band’s inspirations, Richard Dawkins.

Dawkins was featured as a narrator for two of the band’s songs; “Shudder Before The Beautiful” and “The Greatest Show on Earth”. During his concert appearance, Dawkins also performed his narration. Though many people have distinct views on the biologist’s works and theories, the 12,500 fans who appeared at the concert only gave a standing ovation as a uniform response.

Aside from their music, performances were made more appealing by the genre-appropriate visuals, lighting, and the use of pyrotechnics.

Tuomas Holopainen, the band’s songwriter and keyboardist earlier said that their 2015 album is based on the natural world and works of Dawkins. Holopainen described how the professor’s books has influenced him “I have been so enthusiastic about this kind of literature for the past few months, and will be for the upcoming months… something has happened say during the past five, six, seven years, and a lot of it to do with the books that I’ve read, mainly Whitman, Hitchens and Dawkins.”
