96 percent of Canadians would not mind having a woman as leader. 94 percent said the same about having a black leader. Equally high numbers were indicated for having Jewish leaders, Indigenous leaders, and an LGBTQ leader. Most surprising is the country’s indifference to whether or not their leader is a believer. This is in stark contrast to the U.S., where religion plays a major role in elections.

Canada has become a beacon of hope to a world where divisions based on religion, race, and ethnicity have held people in a grip of fear, mistrust, and hatred. As a melting point of different cultures, including the indigenous cultures of the land itself, Canada is governed by a cabinet that is one of the most diverse ever, including Sikhs immigrants from India. The current prime minister, Justin Trudeau, has made intensive progress in promoting Canada’s acceptance of diversity by championing gay rights, legalizing marijuana, celebrating the festivals of different religions, abolishing laws that prevented people from an open display of their religious symbols, and even promising to accept immigrants turned down by the U.S.

58 percent of Canadians said that they are OK with a Muslim leader, and 53 percent is even ready to accept a Hijabi leader, which are much lower percentages compared to the other figures. However, the figures are still higher than those from America, where only 47 percent of people said they would vote for a Muslim candidate. However, only 65 percent of Canadians would be ready to accept an evangelical leader – a number not much higher than the number that said they would vote for a Muslim.

In fact, about one-in-ten Canadians anticipate a gay leader. Similar numbers expect a Jewish or lesbian leader as well. In any case, the numbers that expect leaders from these groups are much higher than the number that would support an evangelical.

Research also suggests that Clinton supporters are more likely to vote for diverse groups than Trump supporters, who tend to stick to voting for a white Christian male candidate.
