Scientologists mark 9/11 as a day to honor emergency responders, including Volunteer Ministers.

September 11 is a time to honor the emergency workers who responded to the terrorist attacks, 412 of whom lost their lives.

Through the heroism of these men and women and others who simply stepped up to lead people out of the twin towers, it is estimated 25,000 survived the attack.

Today is also a day to honor the thousands of police, firefighters, paramedics and other first responders who continue to risk their lives in the service of others. In the United States last year, 69 firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty.

Many Scientologists remember today for the hundreds of Volunteer Ministers from across the U.S. and around the world who served at Ground Zero, taking care of those who searched for survivors and cleaned up the site for more than eight months.

It was 9/11 that inspired Scientology Volunteer Ministers to rededicate themselves to the purpose laid out for the movement by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard in 1976 when he described the Volunteer Minister as “a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.”

ground-zero-four“If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society,” he wrote, “he can do something about it. He can become a Volunteer Minister and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into it trust, decency, honesty and tolerance… A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well.”

Scientology Volunteer Ministers are on the ground in Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and helping clean up neighborhoods in Florida after Hurricane Irma. Over the past few weeks they responded to the La Tuna fire in Los Angeles, floods in Nepal and the Barcelona terrorist attacks.

But it is not only cataclysms that cause the “pain, evil and injustice of existence” and Volunteer Ministers provide personal care and training to anyone in need of help—from seminars in Kenya, Burundi and Cameroon and Volunteer Ministers Cavalcades and Goodwill Tours in Togo, Slovakia, Russia, Colombia, Bolivia and the United States, to individual Scientology Volunteer Ministers who simply reach out to other to help whenever help is needed.
