Coach Tony Bennett uses Christian Lessons to for Success

The NCAA March Madness basketball tournament kicks off this week. The University of Virginia’s men’s basketball team will be participating in the tournament as the No. 1 seed for the third time in the last five years in the hands of head coach Tony Bennett. The Cavaliers beat the North Carolina Tarheels 71-63 in the ACC championship. In the first round of the NCAA tournament, they will be facing the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

The team is however not dwelling on its past wins. Bennett told the Washington Post that every team is capable in this tournament. He said that getting a one seed is a reward for a great regular season and postseason games, but even after getting the seeding, it starts over.

Bennett in 2015 told the Daily Press that his Christian faith is the foundation of his coaching style and career. He said his faith defines him; that it determines how he tries to treat people in his life. Bennett teaches his athletes five biblical pillars that he says are very specific to basketball in ways one wouldn’t think. The pillars are humility, passion, unity, servanthood, and thankfulness. These pillars also guide them in their life, family and even career.

Speaking to CBN News, the athletic director at Regent University Roger Cheeks said Tony Bennett’s team has been largely successful because of him teaching his athletes Christian principles. Cheeks said that Bennett’s willingness to enhance his athletes’ character led to their success. He added that he believes Bennett uses his platform to teach about the body of Christ (how the team works best when it works together) and a biblical message of honor where he treats all of his players as the number one player.

The Cavaliers have seen much success with the teachings and training of Christian coach Tony Bennett. They play their first March Madness game on Sunday.
