‘Roseanne’ Cancelled After Racist Tweet About Muslim Brotherhood

What Roseanne's Muslim Episode Got Right And Wrong

ABC swiftly cancelled the show after Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet this morning.

Roseanne Barr has been no stranger to controversy on social media. She has repeatedly gotten into spats with political liberals over her support from President Trump. Before she began her successful revival of her sitcom “Roseanne” she threatened to quit acting over fighting online.

The decision to quit finally got made, but not by her. ABC has canceled her show after she attacked Valerie Jarrett, a top advisor to Obama calling her the baby of the Muslim Brotherhood and an ape.

The Muslim Brotherhood is the oldest Islamist political party in Arab countries. While it has a violent past of nationalism, the party is mostly reformist preaching social responsibility and political activism in oppressive regimes, like Egypt. Conservatives have regularly attacked political enemies by attaching them to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The comments were immediately rejected by the cast and crew.

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC Entertainment chief Channing Dungey announced.

The show was expected to return for a second season after impressive ratings.
