The President’s softening stance on Islam has become more obvious in his address for Ramadan; calls Muslims partners in fighting extremism.

President Trump greeted Muslims everywhere for the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.[/tweetit] Generally thought of as being a very anti-Islamic person, the president’s views seem to be softening towards Muslims. His address on Ramadan was reflective of this shift in attitude, although he did devote most of his speech to Islamic terrorism.

The difference between then and now is that while earlier he would hold all Muslims responsible for terrorist activities, the president is now speaking of them as allies in the fight against terrorism – a fight that Muslims and non-Muslims alike must engage in together. This was also the main point of his address in Saudi Arabia before a gathering of religious leaders. This time, he alluded to Islam’s non-acceptance of religious extremism saying, “at its core, the spirit of Ramadan strengthens awareness of our shared obligation to reject violence, to pursue peace, and to give to those in need who are suffering from poverty or conflict."

The President condemned the recent terror attacks in the UK and Egypt, saying it was opposed to the spirit of Ramadan. He even glorified the acts of mercy, fasting and other acts of penitence Muslims around the world are observing during Ramadan. This is a drastic departure from the president’s tone of talking about Muslims prior to his election, and even for a while after becoming president.

Underlining his commitment to fighting terrorism, Trump spoke about his meeting in Saudi Arabia, where he met the leaders of 50 Islamic countries. He highlighted his intention to partner with Muslims in the fight against terrorism saying the leaders had gathered at a spot that is holiest to Muslims to discuss how peace and prosperity can be created in the world. He added he fully intended to stand by his words at the meeting and the U.S.A. will fully cooperate with its partners in fighting terrorism.

"During this month of Ramadan, let us be resolved to spare no measure so that we may ensure that future generations will be free of this scourge and able to worship and commune in peace,” he declared.

He concluded his address by wishing all Muslims around the world a blessed Ramadan, finishing off with “May God bless you and your families.”
