A Government-commissioned report (The Taylor Review of the Sustainability of English Churches and Cathedrals) is calling on the Church of England to implement measures to promote the upkeep and use of church buildings. The report offers an insight into the various methods the church could turn to get resources and funding to keep the buildings in use for now and the future while also benefiting the community at large.

The report committee led by Mr. Taylor also stressed on the need for churches to implement regulations that will make the church buildings a community resource while maintaining its core function as a place of worship. The report highlighted the need for churches to adopt these measures as the vast amount of resources spent repairing the churches seemed to reflect as a waste.

The Taylor Review of the Sustainability of English Churches and Cathedralss cited small sized congregations and scarcity of public funds as the major hindrances that inhibited the ability of church-related organizations to care for churches. With these hindrances in mind, the report committee did encourage the churches to adapt to tailor for the modern congregation as a way of getting their funds. They showcased instances where some church buildings had been renovated to include social hubs tendencies such as cafes and playgrounds.

They also recommend opening the church buildings to host community activities such as hosting concerts and music festivals. While the conclusion of report recognizes that these methods won’t work for all churches, it does emphasize the importance of creating a national network of Community Support Advisers. The work of this diverse collection of advisers will be to identify new means by which churches can put their buildings to good use. They will also be tasked with finding new funding avenues for the churches.
