Bill Maher: “Maybe Now Europe will have Sympathy for Israel”

Bill Maher is stirring up quite a bit of trouble after his political comments about the recent attacks against Europe.

Israel and Europe once shared political models, defenses, economics, and even athletic cultures. Over the past few years the union between the two is slowly diminishing. Funding disagreements, security control, and conflicting allies are putting a strain on this once beneficial partnership.

On March 22, 2016 Belgium experienced a tragic attack. Three suicide bombers claimed the lives of 32 people and injured over 300 others. This was only one of the several recent terrorist attacks against Belgium. There are new threats rising against Europe from Israel as the days go by, including the involvement of ISIS.

Bill Maher, a comedian and controversial political commentator, is stirring up quite a bit of trouble after his political comments about the recent attacks against Europe. On his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, he made a statement regarding the attacks against Europe. He seems to be turning the attacks into a “lesson” of sorts for Europe due to their unjust treatment of Israel.

Maher stated:

“Europe has been real assholes about Israel, I mean, in general. The U.N., as of 2015, the United Nations Human Rights Council had issued more official condemnations of Israel than the rest of the world’s nations combined. I wonder now that Europe has been attacked four times now in a little over a year, and they say ISIS has 400 fighters that they are ready to introduce back into Europe, and they’re trying to get a dirty bomb. Maybe Europe will have a little more sympathy for what Israel goes through.”

Maher is well known for his profane driven commentary, so why such a shock? Maher is very forward with his liberal stance when it comes to politics, however; most liberals do not support the act of war. In several heated arguments Maher was involved in, he discusses thoroughly his disagreement with organized religion. Even with these beliefs, he consistently sides with Israel’s radical religious violence.

In a feature interview with Benjamin Netanyahu in 2013, he praised Israel’s ability to “fight wars quick and leave.” He also defended Netanyahu’s usage of racist tactics during this year’s re-election.

Maher said:

“A lot of people were angry at the way Netanyahu won this election. They said it was racist that he said, at the last minute ‘Arab voters are coming out in droves to the polls,’” adding further, “If America was a country that was surrounded by 12 or 13 completely black nations who had militarily attacked us many times, including as recently as last year. Would we let them vote? I don’t know. When we were attacked by the Japanese, we didn’t just not let them vote, we rounded them up and put them in camps.”

On the other side of the spectrum, some view his comment is on par due to Europe’s negligence and unfair treatment towards Israel. Maher also references the unfair treatment towards Israel from the United Nations Human Rights Council. Israel has been condemned in 45 resolutions which is almost half of all country-specific resolutions passed by council.

Maher’s other guests on the show seemed to be in agreement on his statement. They also helped to get his point across in a more civil manner.
